Clarity is Power
Rest and Healing are Underrated
I had the great gift of being coached by a well-known motivational speaker and consultant for several years. He never told me what to do. He seldom criticized or affirmed me.
He told his experience and truth - intellectual and emotional. He modeled authenticity.
In one session, he changed his approach and spoke to me directly and with force.
I had been lamenting the many areas of my life where I felt powerless and unable to make change.
He said, “Stop. Stop everything. I’ve got it. Here’s the key: Clarity is power!”

“Clarity is power”
― Stan Goss
At first, I wasn’t sure what he meant. I’ve been exploring the topic ever since.
I have the gift of creativity. It’s the one thing I’ve never held back or criticized myself about.
My mom affirmed and modeled art and music as a priority and I took the ball and have run with it throughout my life.
I’m a professional actor, singer, and composer. I’m a prolific writer. Creativity has been my guiding approach to life.
The gift of spontaneity and freedom to express is a wonderful thing to have in my toolkit.
I know many others who struggle with this. I’ve coached artists, written books, and facilitated hundreds of workshops on creativity.
But, there is a big shadow in this lifestyle that I’ve been forced by recent painful experiences to look at deeply.
A series of train wrecks has taken me into deep healing…once again.
My pride and ego about being so “free and creative” has crashed.
There is more.
It’s clarity.
I’ve enjoyed my criticisms and resentments about people who are pencil pushers, detail-oriented, and spreadsheet lovers.
I’ve railed against those people who are scared of life, and protect themselves with vigor.
I’ve looked down my nose at those who are hyper-practical.
My dad was hyper-practical and pushed me to be the same.
I’ve pushed back for 40 years - to my detriment.
Yes, there is some loss for those who are constantly anxious about security - and it affects their ability to be spontaneous and creative.
But my work is in the other direction.
Paying attention to the details…
Of health.
Of money.
Of security.
Of relationships.
In my last post, I wrote about a series of hacks that cost me dearly…in money and time.
Since then, I’ve also had the great gift of some unnecessary conflicts with toxic people.
I’ve also had some health challenges that are directly related to a lack of self-care.
I’ve always been motivated by pain more than anything else.
Can you relate?
No one dances into a 12-step program because all is well.
Few of us go into therapy because it’s such a fun thing to do.
At first anyway.
So, the search for more clarity has been thrust upon me.
As a psychologist, I work with many people daily and facilitate monthly workshops on healing.
I’ve been sharing my struggles with them (in appropriate measure), and many have appreciated the journey with me.
I’ve returned to a couple of 12-step programs (food and money) that have already gotten me back on track toward clarity.
I’m using my community of healers to discharge some old wounds that are ready for healing.
Over the years, I’ve learned to share my struggles and solutions.
I’ve learned to listen carefully to those who have transcended trauma - past and present.
I’m so grateful that I now know there are solutions - and they all involve getting support and being honest about the struggle.
An Affirmation
“Today I am owning my struggles. I’m getting support. I am finding clarity and purpose.
I’m back on track my friends.
Also, I’m taking these insights into a program for you that I’ll be announcing soon.
A 5-email free course on healing those old wounds and finding freedom.
